Important Info

By 2030, the Environmental Protection Agency will ban refrigerants that contain chlorine, because they deplete the earth's ozone layer. The deadline seems like the distant future, but commercial HVAC systems have long lifespans, and the phaseout involves ending production of the most common air-conditioning refrigerant -- HCFC-22 -- by 2010.

REFRIGERATION 101

Most HVAC/R units eventually leak because of mechanical wear of components, vibrations, and various forms of corrosion. All units have the potential to leak to some extent over their lifespan, because it is impossible to manufacture a 100% leak proof system. The time taken for the system to completely lose its refrigerant charge can vary from one to 30 years. Unfortunately, not all leaks can be located or accessible to repair even if they are found.  Continually putting in refrigerant into a leaky system, even though they know it will leak out over the course of the next six to 12 months and their services will be needed again, should not be an option. It’s also detrimental to the environment and the equipment.

DID YOU KNOW...

What Makes R-410A a Better Refrigerant?

It's Environmentally Friendlier If your system ever leaks, the escaping refrigerant won't contribute to ozone depletion! You Avoid the Risk that R-22 could Become Expensive or Difficult to Get When your System Needs to be Repaired in a Few Years The old refrigerant R-22 will be phased out along with other ozone depleting chemicals, and both supply and demand of this chemical will be significantly affected by current and upcoming regulations. By selecting an air conditioner or heat pump that uses R-410A, you will avoid the risk associated with purchasing a product that is destined to become obsolete.
